Word of the day
Just writing up my second assignment for "Understanding the Continents" (which by the way is not a good title - the word confusion really should appear in there somewhere). Anyway, came across this gem of a word:
"magnetostratigraphy" - basically measuring the magnetic reversals the Earth has been through. Impressive though I thought :)

When Bagels turn bad
Every now and again, I copy stuff onto DVD for a friend of mine, and just recently this has been causing my PC to crash. Rather halpfully (for Microsoft) it comes up and asks if I want Microsoft to look for a solution, to which I always click Cancel. Yesterday I clicked OK, and it came back and said I had a virus - Bagel32.
"No I don't" I thought, afterall I have Virus Protection. Except I didn't, the virus had turned it off. So I loaded the program and ran a scan. It told me that a rootkit virus was attempting to hide itself and that I should run the scan in Safe Mode. This I did, and it promptly found 439 viruses :(
It deleted all those and I ran another scan (again in Safe Mode) - nothing. Good to go. So I booted into Vista, and ran a scan - Blue Screen of Death. Rebooted, and opened Word - BSOD. Ah, not so good after all then. After a small pause, I decided on rebuilding my machine, and so as I write this on my laptop, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is merrily installing away. Here's hoping that I don't get any more viruses, well for a while at least!

5-3
Just a quick note to say "Yay" - Liverpool won their Champions League quarter final against Arsenal 5-3 (1-1 after first leg). It was a great game, but then I would say that wouldn't I?!

Understanding the Continents
Got my first assignment back today for my current OU course (Understanding the Continents).
I got 79% which is alright, but I was hoping for more to be honest. I was quite annoyed at myself really, as I correctly identified all the errors in question 1, knew how to put them right, but messed up my reasoning on a lot of them.
Likewise for Q2, got the right answers, but my reasoning let me down again, so I lost some more marks which should have been a given.
I can see where I went wrong, so I should be able to rectify such mistakes from my next assignment. I hope so anyway, as 68% of the marks are for explanation type answers :(
One a different note: Eddie Izzard on computers - fantastic (and true):
